Newcastle watching ‘very important’ Brighton player very closely ahead of summer transfer window
TBR Football can exclusively confirm that Newcastle United are monitoring a “very important” Brighton & Hove Albion player.
The Magpies are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window as they look to kick on following their Carabao Cup triumph.
With Newcastle now guaranteed a spot in European competition, they will need to bolster their ranks.
Meanwhile, Brighton’s recent loss of form has left them increasingly unlikely to qualify for Europe.
With such an impressive squad, rival clubs will be circling around their players this summer, especially if they don’t reach Europe.

Newcastle eyeing Brighton star Jan Paul von Hecke
TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that Newcastle are one of the clubs keeping close tabs on Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.
We can reveal that German side Bayer Leverkusen are also taking a keen interest in the Netherlands international – who has become a key figure for Brighton over the last 12 months.
Leverkusen are losing Jonathan Tah and are working on possible replacements and we can confirm Van Hecke is a player they are watching closely.
But they are set to face competition for Van Hecke, with a number of their Premier League rivals having taken a liking to him, and we can reveal one of those is Newcastle.
Van Hecke has been with Brighton since 2020 after they snapped him up from NAC Breda, and he signed a new contract in 2023.
“I’m really pleased for JP, and to see an extension of a contract of another important player,” then head coach Roberto de Zerbi said at the time, via .
“Last year he showed all his quality and his potential. He was very important in us achieving our goal.”
Van Hecke has two years left on his current deal and we are told the Seagulls are looking to tie him down to a new deal.
Whether Lloyd Kelly uncertainty could affect potential Jan Paul van Hecke move
Newcastle are facing up to the prospect that Lloyd Kelly could return from his loan spell at Juventus, given they are in danger of dropping out of the Serie A top six.
However, TBR Football has been told that this will not impact on Newcastle’s plans to strengthen their defensive ranks.
Juventus’ deal for Kelly becomes an obligation if they finish in a European spot, which is the top six in Italy – but Newcastle insists they will assess that situation if, and when, it happens.
Newcastle are in search of central defenders and are doing work on a number of other options alongside Van Hecke.
TBR Football has previously revealed that the St James’ Park outfit has done work on the likes of Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande and AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw.
