Newcastle boss Eddie Howe issues honest verdict on Bournemouth’s disallowed goal in stoppage time

Newcastle United were second-best for much of the afternoon but managed to hold Bournemouth to a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium.

The Magpies went behind in the first half to a Marcus Tavernier tap-in and struggled to build any real momentum until the later stages of the second half.

Anthony Gordon levelled the affair with 15 minutes of normal time remaining and it looked as though Newcastle were the more likely team to find the winner.

Bournemouth thought they’d snatched all three points in stoppage time, however, when Dango Ouattara bundled in from a corner but VAR controversially ruled it out – deeming it a handball.

Eddie Howe has now given his verdict on the decision.

Eddie Howe says Bournemouth’s disallowed goal was a ‘welcome surprise’

Speaking post-match, Howe admitted that Bournemouth’s disallowed winner was a ‘welcome surprise’.

“A welcome surprise because we weren’t appealing so I’d be interested to see the replays,” the 46-year-old said, via .

“We had a VAR decision go against us, this one goes for us. Bournemouth may have a different viewpoint but I think a draw is a fair result.”

The Magpies boss was clearly understanding of his former club’s frustration but noted that the result was a fair one.

Harvey Barnes deserves to start vs Tottenham Hotspur

Whilst Newcastle were miles off the pace, Harvey Barnes was certainly a shining light for the visitors.

The former Leicester City wide player was a constant threat when he came on just before the hour mark and set up Gordon’s equaliser.

Barnes will certainly feel he’s done enough to start the next match against Tottenham Hotspur, though, his inclusion will likely force Gordon to the right-hand side.

Howe certainly has a lot to think about, particularly at the back.
