Newcastle are one of the sides most interested in league leaders’ ‘special’ attacker

Journalist Dean Jones has suggested that Newcastle United are one of the Premier League sides showing the most interest in Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.

Jones was speaking on the podcast about some of the players to watch out for during the transfer windows of 2024, with the 20-year-old clearly set to attract plenty of attention.

Florian Wirtz is definitely establishing himself as one of the most exciting talents in the world right now. The youngster has already scored five goals and contributed eight assists across the Bundesliga and Europa League so far this season.

Newcastle really keen on Florian Wirtz

His goal in the weekend win over Freiburg was magical. And it seems that Leverkusen are going to struggle to keep him in the long-term.

Jones noted that there are links or interest from the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona. But he went on to suggest that there are plenty of sides hoping to bring him to the Premier League, with Eddie Howe’s men positioning themselves near the front of the queue.

“Of course, there’s loads of interest from the Premier League. But I’m told that the prime interest comes from Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle at this stage,” he told .

“That’s where we should be looking. Wirtz is not going to be a January signing for anybody. He’s just not going to leave Bayer Leverkusen’s project at this moment in time.”

Youngster fits perfectly into what Eddie Howe is building at St James’ Park

Newcastle’s interest should not come as a great surprise. Firstly, Wirtz is a ‘‘ talent, with .

Reports from the claimed that Newcastle scouted Wirtz twice earlier this year. And you would not be at all surprised if they had been monitoring his performances a lot since then.

Newcastle have been willing to spend money under their new owners. But they have not splashed the cash in the way many probably expected when the takeover went through.

Instead, they have predominantly targeted players who will continue to improve working under Eddie Howe. And they are building an exceptional unit which boasts huge potential for the future.

Wirtz therefore, would fit perfectly into the squad Howe is putting together on Tyneside. So it would be a huge coup if Newcastle did now win the race for his signature.
