Newcastle are now keeping a ‘close eye’ on £51.1m Barcelona defender as Marc Guehi alternative

Newcastle United are in the market for a centre-back this summer transfer window.

The Magpies have been trying to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi for weeks now and it seems they’re no closer to completing a deal having had multiple bids rejected.

That said, the club have had to look at alternative targets as they consider walking away from the Guehi deal.

Toulouse’s Logan Costa has been linked to Newcastle whilst Joachim Anderson is also thought to be on their radar.

Now, a Barcelona defender has just been linked to Tyneside.

Newcastle now interested in Andreas Christensen

Newcastle United are now keeping a ‘close eye’ on Barcelona centre-back Andreas Christensen, according to Spanish outlet .

The Tynesiders are weighing up Guehi alternatives and have just added the former Chelsea defender to their shortlist.

Barca are reluctant to sell Christensen but would consider an offer that’s deemed to good to refuse.

A £51m price tag has been mooted, so given Newcastle have submitted bids north of £60m for Guehi, it’d certainly be a feasible deal to do.

The Denmark international arrived at Camp Nou two summers ago on a free transfer, so any forthcoming sale would represent a significant profit.

Andreas Christensen profile

Christensen particularly excels in possession of the ball and embodies a typical Barcelona player.

data suggest he’s of a very similar profile to Manchester United’s new signing Matthijs de Ligt and Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji – who’s flourished in the Premier League since his arrival in 2022.

So, if he were to join Newcastle, it’d be regarded as a real coup.
