Newcastle are now ‘favourites’ to sign midfielder Declan Rice thinks is ‘one of the best’

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are favourites to sign Kalvin Phillips.

That is according to TuttoJuve, which has noted Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s stance on the former Leeds United midfielder.

So, what has been reported about Newcastle United and Kalvin Phillips? Let’s take a look.

Newcastle United ‘favourites’ to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City

Well, according to , Newcastle United and Juventus are interested in signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in the January transfer window.

The report in the Italian news outlet has claimed that Newcastle are “the favourites” for the England international midfielder.

TuttoJuve has claimed that City manager Pep Guardiola is ready to let the 28-year-old leave in the middle of the season.

Arsenal have also been linked, and so too have Liverpool.

My View: Kalvin Phillips could flourish at Newcastle United

In my view, Newcastle United and Kalvin Phillips are perfect for each other. I think that Eddie Howe’s side should try to get a deal done as soon as possible.

Phillips has struggled for playing time at City since his move from Leeds United in the summer of 2022. However, that does not diminish his quality and what he brings to a team.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice plays with Phillips for England, and the former West Ham United star rates him highly.

Rice about Phillips in November 2023: “He’s one of the best professionals I’ve ever seen, if I’m honest with you.

“I’ve seen players who don’t play and throw their toys out of the pram completely and with Kal, every time he comes back here he pops on a shirt and puts in 110 per cent.

“He played with me against Scotland and I think that was his first start in a while and he played really well, so I’ll never question his professionalism and I don’t think any of the lads will.

“As a person as well, he’s an all-round top guy and he brings that onto the pitch. It’s obviously difficult when you’re not playing as a footballer and I know he wants to be playing more, for sure, but mentally he hasn’t broken.

“He hasn’t thrown his toys out of the pram. He gives everything every day, he still improves and still plays with a smile on his face so I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Sandro Tonali is serving a ban at the moment, and I think that Phillips could replace him in the Newcastle starting lineup.

Phillip is 28 now and is at the top of his game. I believe that the midfielder would be a good long-term signing for Newcastle. He has his best years ahead of him.

Newcastle are aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season, while Manchester City’s target this campaign will be to win the league and the UEFA Champions League… yet again.
