Report: Newcastle already have eyes on ‘world-class’ player for January, would cost less than Pope
Newcastle and Arsenal are both in the running, alongside Juventus, to try and sign Benfica full-back Alex Grimaldo.
The left-back was on the eyes of Manchester City and more in the summer but has remained at Benfica, where he has now entered the final 12 months of his contract. And according to , Grimaldo could be on his way out from Portugal in January for as little as £8.5m, with Arsenal and Newcastle both keen.
It’s claimed Juventus will go and watch Grimaldo in action next week as they continue to look at cheaper options to bolster their squad. Of course, Juve are unlikely to be the only ones in attendance, with the January window just a few months around the corner.

Grimaldo, who was as being ‘world-class’ and one of the best left-backs in Europe, would surely be open to a move to England, given the financial benefits on offer in the Premier League. Of course, Arsenal can also offer European football, while Newcastle are building for the future under Eddie Howe and PIF.
TBR’s View: Grimaldo A Bargain Buy For All
Given the price and the influx of players from Portugal into the Premier League in recent times, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a scramble for Grimaldo in January.
He is a solid addition for most clubs and good full-backs who can attack and defend in the modern game are often at a premium. Alex Grimaldo does both well and in current market conditions, less than £10m is nothing.
With no sign of a new contract and Premier League clubs just spending short of £2bn in the summer, Grimaldo will certainly fancy his chances of securing a January move.
