Newcastle among teams in the mix to sign £12.5m South American who’s been compared to Xavi

Newcastle United have made a busy start to the summer transfer window and could now find themselves in a three-way tussle to sign a South American midfielder.

The Magpies have tried to shuffle things around in June when it comes to finances to give themselves the best chance of adding to the squad.

Out have gone the likes of Yankuba Minteh, while incomings have included Lloyd Kelly and Odysseas Vlachodimos, while Lewis Hall’s move from Chelsea has also become permanent.

However, as with all Premier League clubs and managers, Eddie Howe is in no mood to slow down when it comes to incomings.

A new midfielder and a forward are high on Newcastle’s agenda.

And according to reports from Italy, Newcastle are in the mix to sign a Brazilian who has already experienced the Premier League.

Melo spent a period with Liverpool previously but it was a disaster as a serious injury curtailed any chance of him impressing at Anfield.

However, Melo has got himself back to fitness and played regularly for Fiorentina last season in their midfield.

He has now returned to Juventus, who are looking to offload him for around £12.5m if they can.

It’s reported by Tutto Sport that Newcastle, Everton and Wolves all hold an interest in Melo.

Arthur Melo was once compared to Spanish legend Xavi

While the impression we got of Melo in England from Liverpool wasn’t too high, that’s not to say he hasn’t been highly-rated in the past.

Indeed, a certain Lionel Messi had high praise for Melo previously, comparing him to Spanish and Barcelona great, Xavi Hernandez.

“He is very similar to Xavi as he likes to have the ball, play short, not lose it and is very solid,” Messi told .

“He surprised me but I like them all. Arthur has the style we have here, he understood quickly in training.”

Newcastle, then, could be getting a top midfielder if he can stay fit. And with question marks over Bruno Guimaraes’ future, Melo could well be the ideal cheaper replacement.
