New Liverpool hero discusses future after Saturday performance

Nathaniel Phillips has spoken about his future at Liverpool following his Premier League debut for the Merseyside outfit on Saturday evening, as the centre-back helped the Reds win 2-1 against West Ham United.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho all on the treatment table, 23-year-old Phillips was handed just his second senior Liverpool outing – after impressing midway through a Stuttgart loan spell in the FA Cup against Everton last term.

The former Bolton defender came through the match with huge praise and even the likes of Andy Robertson and Jamie Carragher selecting Phillips as Man of the Match on social media, after the win. Jurgen Klopp also praised his defender.

Now, Phillips has delivered a verdict on his Liverpool future. The centre-back was the subject of interest from Championship sides in the summer, but Liverpool chose to keep him – and Phillips is desperate to continue getting game time.

“Definitely [want more game time],” “At my age it’s important I’m playing first-team football. I’m not going to be storming into the manager’s office making demands, but I need to be pushing on.

“After tonight, I’m sure myself I’m capable of playing at this level so I just need to maintain those standards and build on it.”

TBR’s view – Is staying at Liverpool the right decision?

that 12 clubs wanted him in the summer, mostly from the Championship but also from Germany and the Netherlands. It is also claimed that Swansea made a £2.5million offer for Phillips.

Staying at Liverpool has worked out, but he remains out of the Champions League squad and as soon as Joel Matip or Fabinho return, it is likely that Phillips will be back watching matches from the sidelines.

He has entered the final year of his contract and despite his impressive outing against West Ham, he should look to leave.
