‘Nerves of steel’: Sam Allardyce blown away by Everton player he says will go down in football history
Sam Allardyce managed Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during their time working together at Sunderland.
That breakthrough at the Stadium of Light laid the foundations for Pickford to go on and become England number one.
Pickford came agonisingly close to getting his hands on the Euro 2020 trophy, and saved two penalties in the shootout.
He was unable to help England avoid defeat as Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed their spot-kicks under the most intense of pressure.

Allardyce on Pickford
Allardyce was of course the England manager before Gareth Southgate, who has led the side into the last two tournaments and will take them into the World Cup.
Before that tournament in Qatar, Allardyce ran the rule over the current Three Lions squad on a with former assistant Sammy Lee.
He made his admiration for Pickford clear, saying: “He has nerves of steel.
“He’ll be in the only goalie in the history of football that has saved two penalties in a final and doesn’t win it.
“I don’t think that’s ever happened. He should have been the hero.”
Pickford did his bit and when he saved from Jorginho, it really felt like it might have been England’s night, but it was not to be.
The goalkeeper has faced repeated questions over his position as England’s number one, but he has shrugged them all off and never lets his country down.
That means he will go to Qatar as the first pick for Southgate, on the back of a campaign where he has again been outstanding for Everton.
He has even worn the armband on occasion at Goodison Park, showcasing his maturity during a year which could end with him lifting the biggest prize in world football.
