Nemanja Matic previously said £35m Tottenham target ‘has great potential’

Tottenham Hotspur are up and running in the summer transfer window and chances are they’re just getting started.

Spurs have one signing over the line so far, bringing English wonderkid Archie Gray to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Leeds United.

Tottenham are likely to be busy over the coming weeks as Ange Postecoglou seeks more top additions to his squad.

Spurs qualified for the Europa League, so they’ll need more strength in depth to ensure they can handle the extra workload.

Tottenham are now said to be in pursuit of a £35million-rated attacker who Manchester United and Serbia icon Nemanja Matic once deemed to have “great potential”.

Tottenham in pursuit of Desire Doue

The player in question is Rennes winger Desire Doue, one of the brightest talents in the French top flight.

Transfer insider Ben Jacobs claimed earlier this week that Tottenham are beginning to really push to sign the 19-year-old.

“Desire Doue, PSG are one of the suitors, Bayern and Spurs, and Spurs are the ones who are really starting to move now,” he said on .

Back in May, the claimed that Tottenham – plus Arsenal and Manchester United – had asked Rennes what it would take to sign Doue. They are believed to want £35million.

Doue earns widespread praise from colleagues

Doue shone for Rennes in 2023/24, making 17 starts in Ligue 1 as he scored four goals and provided five assists in France’s top-flight.

Matic, who played for Rennes in the first half of last season, sung the 19-year-old’s praises in conversation with France-Ouest, via .

“In my entire career, I’ve never played in such a young team, with players at 19 or 20 years old,” said Matic.

“[But] it’s always interesting to see how they progress. Desire has great potential.

“There are a few others but I don’t want to say their names because I don’t think it’s good for them.”

And teammate Baptiste Santamaria recently said the reported Spurs target could become ‘unplayable’.

“He’s a very talented player with a great sense of football,” he told last month. “But he’s still young. But he’s a player who aspires to go to the biggest clubs.

“He’s one of a kind: he likes to hit the ball but he’s solid on his feet. Desire’s technical, percussive and physical qualities are quite incredible.

“When he becomes more consistent, he’ll be unplayable. For his age, he’s the most gifted youngster I’ve seen in my career.”

Doue seems like a top talent and it’ll be good to see whether Tottenham will intensify their pursuit of him in the coming weeks, maybe even days.
