Neil Mellor discusses Rhian Brewster and Curtis Jones’ first-team Liverpool prospects

that he thinks both Curtis Jones and Rhian Brewster have a future at Liverpool in the coming years – and compared the latter to Jadon Sancho.

Liverpool Under-23 captain Jones, 19, has been in excellent form for the club’s second string – as well as breaking into the senior side and scoring two goals in eight outings, including a stunning long-range effort to beat Everton in the FA Cup.

Meanwhile Brewster, who turned 20 earlier this month, is currently out on loan at Championship side Swansea City – after making three senior Reds appearances during the first half of the season. He has scored four goals in 11 Swans outings.

Former Liverpool striker Mellor believes both Jones and Brewster have a future at Liverpool and should remain at Anfield next season, rather than leaving the club on loan. He even suggested Brewster could follow Sancho as another England talent.

“I think Curtis has the potential to play for the first team. He makes things happen. He is training with the best team in the world, learning every day. There is no rush, not while he’s around this squad, learning every day at the highest level.”

“I like him. He leads the line well, he’s a handful. He’s the best centre-forward we’ve seen coming through at Liverpool in a long time. He knows how to finish. You look at the way people like Sancho, Hudson-Odoi, Foden have kicked on – why not Rhian? There’s a top-class player there.”

TBR’s view – Brewster needs another loan, Jones has a chance

Brewster has got to leave the club on loan again next season, with both Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino ahead of him in the pecking order. Unfortunately for Brewster, it appears Liverpool are on the lookout for a new striker.

Marcus Thuram has been linked, and the Gladbach star could be a replacement for Origi. A third-choice striker in a one-man striker system, Brewster should look for a Premier League loan. It is a different story for Jones, though.

Indeed, the versatile winger can play in numerous positions and with Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri both potentially leaving, Jones would be an excellent replacement.
