Neil Lennon says Celtic have a ‘very gifted’ player who is close to leaving the club

With Celtic looking set to let a number of players leave the club in January, Neil Lennon has said that there is one whose career at Paradise is close to coming to an end.

The former Celtic manager was speaking about Mikey Johnston and his newfound rise to fame at the club after his performance at St Johnstone and has told how that the 24-year-old is on his last legs at the club.

Lennon said [], “He gets very frustrated very quickly if things aren’t going for him. And that overrides what he should be doing. He lets the mental side of the game get the better of him.

“It’s like sometimes he throws the hands around. He is very gifted. He’s always been gifted. He’s had a horrendous run of injuries.

“I think he went out on loan for a year at Portugal, he’s been picked for Ireland and I think that’ll give him a real boost.

“He’s been in and around the squad and he wasn’t featuring at all but he’s not a young kid anymore. He must be 24, 25 now so he’ll be seeing this as maybe his last chance saloon at Celtic.

“And he’s got to play, not just play, but play consistently well.”

Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda’s return at Celtic is a problem for Mikey Johnston

Both players have been an integral part of Celtic’s successes over the past two seasons and, as it stands, both players have now returned to training from injury.

That’s a problem for Johnston as he starts to find a bit of form because it would take a brave man to bet that one, or both, will return to the Celtic first team as soon as they are fit enough.

And Johnston will find himself back at square one. Unless he heeds the advice given to him by Brendan Rodgers at the start of the season.

The Celtic manager challenged the winger to stay fit and to prove that he can handle the tactical side of the game.

It seems, against St Johnstone at least, he has done that but the proof will be in the pudding if he gets a starting slot against Hibernian tomorrow night.
