Neil Lennon once compared Patrick Roberts to Lionel Messi amid Celtic return rumours

Celtic are on the hunt for a new wideman this winter and according to reports, one former Bhoys star is potentially on their radar.

that Celtic have been ‘alerted’ by the availability of former loanee Patrick Roberts, who has been told by current loan club Middlesbrough he can find a new home in January.

It is certainly a deal that Neil Lennon would be open to, judging by his previous comments.

Whilst Roberts was a success story of the Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers era at Parkhead, that does not mean that Lennon is not an admirer.

Back in April 2016, future Hibernian boss Lennon was acting as a pundit for Sky Sports as Celtic took on his upcoming Edinburgh rivals Hearts.

Lennon was so impressed with the goal he even compared it to something the enigmatic Lionel Messi would have produced at Barcelona.

“It was a brilliant finish, absolute top class, Messi-esque,” he is “A lovely disguise on the pass and what a brilliant finish, that was the real turning point in the game.”

Roberts’ goal gave Celtic the lead and they went on to win the game 3-1. The Englishman was a firm fan favourite during his time at Celtic but his career has stalled since leaving the club after the end of his second loan spell at the club in 2018.

But a return to Glasgow might hopefully see Roberts produce some more Messi like moments of magic.
