Neil Lennon once compared Celtic target Patrick Roberts to Lionel Messi

Celtic are reportedly interested in bringing former loanee Patrick Roberts back to the club from Manchester City.

the Bhoys have made an approach in the region of £3 million for the current Middlesbrough loanee, who spent two and a half years on loan at Parkhead, winning seven trophies in the process.

That initial bid has been rejected but Celtic are said to remain keen on a deal for the City-owned player, who has recently struggled in loan spells at Girona and Norwich City.

Roberts’ success at Celtic came under the guidance of former managers Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers, but there is no doubt that Neil Lennon is a fan.

Whilst Roberts never scored against Lennon’s Hibernian whilst the Celtic boss was in charge at Easter Road, he did score a sensational goal against their Edinburgh rivals Hearts back in April 2016.

Lennon was acting as acompared Roberts to a certain Lionel Messi.

“It was a brilliant finish, absolute top class, Messi-esque.

“A lovely disguise on the pass and what a brilliant finish, that was the real turning point in the game.”

So there is no doubt that Lennon would love to have Roberts at the club to add to the wide options he currently has at his disposal at Celtic.

Roberts offers something different from the right-wing when compared to James Forrest. His ability to cut in onto his left-foot makes him a contrasting threat and Celtic fans would undoubtedly welcome the Londoner back to Glasgow.

Perhaps he could conjure up some more Messi magic under Lennon in the process.
