Neil Lennon makes big claim about Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and a potential Ibrox sacking
(Tuesday, 11:55AM) that Steven Gerrard might have been given longer in the Rangers job than other candidates. The Rangers manager guided his side to the Scottish Premiership title during 2020-21, eventually resulting in Lennon’s resignation as Celtic manager.
Lennon replaced Brendan Rodgers in February 2019 as Leicester City completed a move to raid Celtic for Rodgers. He guided Celtic to the treble that season, and then again during 2019-20. But in 2020-21, it was a different story as Rangers finally surpassed their Old Firm rivals.
Gerrard has made Rangers a force in Europe and went throughout 2020-21 unbeaten in the Premiership. While he will be disappointed not to add trophies to his title win, the victory saw Lennon resign earlier on in 2021. Reflecting, Lennon made a claim about Gerrard’s Ibrox tenure.
“He’s done a good job, he’s won the league under pressure. He has not won as many trophies as he would have liked. He has got a bit longer than other Rangers managers might have got, but he has done a very good job,” Lennon said. Asked by Jim White if Lennon believes Gerrard’s reputation gave him more time, Lennon batted the question away.

At the end of his second season in charge, Rangers had improved in Europe but Celtic had still won the league – and eventually – the Cups. Rangers were seemingly back at square one with Celtic still all-conquering. Many might have thought that Gerrard could have gone.
But the Liverpool legend remained and what a decision it was. There was always progression, but some claimed it had not been quick enough. Did Gerrard get more time because of his reputation? Well, either way, it has worked for Rangers as they look to defend their crown next term.
