Neco Williams trains with the Liverpool first-team in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s absence

Liverpool youngster Neco Williams has been training with the first-team ahead of the midweek game against Genk.

Jurgen Klopp has allowed Williams to spend some time with the first-team as Trent Alexander-Arnold misses out. Liverpool announced () that Alexander-Arnold has a virus and has been left at home for the trip to Belgium.

Without Alexander-Arnold, Klopp needed to find a player who knew how to play at right-back. Williams has been drafted into the first-team training sessions, presumably to prepare Liverpool’s wingers against a genuine full-back.

Williams has worked his way up through the ranks at Liverpool and he is enjoying a successful campaign so far. The 18-year-old has played 13 games for the academy teams this season, racking up a tally of three goals and two assists.

With Ki-Jana Hoever at the U17 World Cup with the Netherlands, Williams was the logical next choice at right-back. Klopp has been taking a look at him in training, although he is not in the squad to face Genk on Wednesday.

TBR’s view

This is a big opportunity for Williams to impress the Liverpool hierarchy. His promotion to first-team training is a testament to his fine form in the U18 and U23 squads lately.

If he can continue to impress in the academy sides, there is no reason why he can’t make a first-team breakthrough in the near future. He has watched team-mates like Hoever, Sepp van den Berg and Rhian Brewster do it – so is Williams next?
