Nation’s media laud Steven Bergwijn after Netherlands display

Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn was unsurprisingly lauded by the media in The Netherlands after scoring twice for his country as they beat Denmark 4-2 on Saturday.

Bergwijn went into this international break in need of a boost. The 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order with Antonio Conte’s side. He has not started in the Premier League since January.

In fact, his last four goals for club and country have all come against Kasper Schmeichel. Of course, he scored that unbelievable brace in stoppage-time back in January as Tottenham beat Leicester City in the King Power Stadium.

And he has now inflicted more misery upon Schmeichel following his latest international display. Bergwijn broke the deadlock with a brilliant header during the first-half against the Euro 2020 semi-finalists.

He went on to score an outstanding second in the second-half to wrap up the game for the home side. Bergwijn broke in from the left flank and curled the ball into the far corner with his right foot. Schmeichel made a desperate dive, but was unable to prevent it from going in.

And his performance led to plenty of praise from the Dutch media.

and gave Bergwijn an 8/10 rating. Only Frenkie de Jong could match that with the latter publication.

VI insisted that he trumped everyone on the pitch. Meanwhile, Voetbal Primeur suggested that he was ‘excellent’ alongside Memphis Depay up front for Louis van Gaal’s men.

Bergwijn ready to contribute for Tottenham after ‘excellent’ Netherlands display

It is not hard to see why Bergwijn has struggled for minutes with Tottenham of late. Obviously, Antonio Conte is going to rely on Son Heung-min and Harry Kane. But Spurs have also benefitted from Dejan Kulusevski starting brilliantly following his January move.

However, there is still some way to go this term. And with that, Conte may have to rotate his options at some stage when Tottenham perhaps need another Leicester-esque comeback.

Bergwijn’s two goals this weekend should leave Spurs fans with some hope that he could still contribute to their top-four push.
