National media outlet criticise ‘shameful’ Tottenham for what they just posted online

Tottenham have not even kicked a ball since Sunday 1st September – but the north Londoners have now come under fire in Colombia.

The boredom of the international break usually sees football clubs attempt to connect with their fans on social media, jumping on hot trends – such as the current #BarclaysMen theme – to strike up engagement.

Now – however – one post uploaded by Tottenham during the international break has been criticised…

Tottenham criticised for Cristian Romero post

Spurs No.17 Cristian Romero suffered a 2-1 defeat with Argentina in a feisty World Cup qualifier against Colombia on Tuesday, in a clash which sparked unsightly scenes after the final whistle.

Emiliano Martinez shoved a camera away in anger as fans created an intimidating cauldron of noise, while Romero retaliated to Colombia’s win by appearing to touch the FIFA world champions badge which adorns Argentina’s shirt.

Tottenham seemed to enjoy this boastful moment from the South American, posting “simplemente Cuti” on X (previously known as Twitter) along with footage of the moment, which you can see below.

This post has left Colombian news outlet livid, for some reason.

The South American organisation described Tottenham as “shameful” for glorifying Romero’s actions, while also writing that it was an “unnecessary” thing to upload.

If you have not watched the footage above, the Spurs defender does not even seem to be deliberately tapping the gold badge, instead just wiping his hands on his shirt, so RCN Noticias have well and truly overreacted, to say the least.

A nice warmup for Sunday’s north London derby

Playing in such a fiery South American encounter has surely prepared Romero – who silenced Luis Diaz – well for Sunday’s north London derby clash against Arsenal.

These sort of games usually require a unique blend of displaying toughness and assertiveness, but also a need to keep your composure and not get sucked into any mind games from the opposition.

Romero – who Real Madrid wanted to sign this summer – has often let himself down with his hotheadedness, but having improved on that front in recent times, Tuesday’s clash against Colombia should also help him approach Sunday’s derby in the right frame of mind.
