Nathan Patterson shares what Giovanni van Bronckhorst told him before Rangers cameo role

Nathan Patterson has told Rangers TV – – what Giovanni van Bronckhorst told him just before he came on, at Ibrox.

Patterson, 20, was handed his first appearances in the Europa League group stage this season – having been previously shunned by Steven Gerrard.

Indeed, Gerrard had only used Patterson six times this season – despite the Scotland international’s enormous potential and ongoing meteoric rise.

But on Thursday night, Patterson was brought on for the best part of 30 minutes as Rangers looked to hold on a 2-0 lead over Sparta Prague.

A brace from Alfredo Morelos saw the Gers book their place in the last 32 of the Europa League. Patterson shares what his boss said, before coming on.

“No matter where I got on, I enjoyed it. The manager said, ‘Go on and keep the clean sheet. Make sure the lads keep the 2-0 lead.’ I did that. Buzzing.”

Patterson on van Bronckhorst: Rangers gaffer makes perfect start

There are two main things Rangers fans will have noticed, when comparing Gerrard’s recent matches in charge and van Bronckhorst’s debut.

The first, is the increased energy among the Rangers players. The work rate was much improved, suggesting Gerrard’s stint in charge had gone stale.

But the second was perhaps more important and allowed that energy and high press. Van Bronckhorst changed the 4-3-3, into a 4-2-3-1 system.

Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and Joe Aribo played as attacking midfielders behind Alfredo Morelos. It gave Rangers energy, and the high press.
