Nat Phillips says Ozan Kabak was vital in Liverpool securing Champions League qualification

Liverpool defender, Nat Phillips, has lauded former teammate Ozan Kabak as being a crucial factor in the club securing Champions League qualification.

The Reds finished the season on fire with a season of impressive wins.

Phillips was at the heart of it for Liverpool. Deployed earlier in the season as emergency cover, the no-nonsense centre-half soon became a favourite of Jurgen Klopp.

His partnerships with the likes of Fabinho, Rhys Williams, and Ozan Kabak helped the Reds over the line in the end.

And it is Kabak who Phillips had some big praise for. Speaking to the official the defender credited Kabak for his role with the club.

For me, it was just a case of when I get my opportunity to play as well as possible and do as much as I can to take it and make sure I retain the place. That’s how I approached it,” Phillips .

“Ozzy came in and did a good job. He helped us out massively. I don’t think we’d have finished the season the way we did if he hadn’t come over and helped us out so much.

Liverpool opted not to sign Kabak at the end of the season. This, despite the club having an agreement in place. Instead, Jurgen Klopp has moved for Ibrahima Konate. The young Frenchman has arrived for over £30m, much to the delight of Reds fans.

Kabak did his job for Liverpool, there is no question

At the end of the day, he was signed as a stop gap and he proved to be just that in the end. Kabak was never exceptional, but just did enough to help out.

Had Konate not been available, there’s every chance Klopp might have signed him. But his stock has not taken a hit, and someone will definitely take a punt now.

Phillips is right to praise him and it’s great to see, too.
