Napoli sporting director in England to beat Aston Villa to ‘world-class’ £38m signing

Aston Villa have been one of the biggest spenders in Europe this summer, with only Chelsea and Atletico Madrid spending more than the Villians.

The arrivals of Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Samuel Iling-Junior have been huge additions for Unai Emery’s side, with Villa also selling quite the array of stars in Moussa Diaby, Douglas Luiz and Tim Iroegbunam.

With Raheem Sterling now a target for Villa, it’s clear that more could be spent in the market for the Villa Park side, who this season will want to challenge again for top-four as well as compete in the UEFA Champions League.

Yet Villa could be about to miss out on a top target thanks to Napoli.

Napoli official in England to meet Villa target Romelu Lukaku

According to , Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna is to meet with Romelu Lukaku this week in England, with the Italian transfer chief on a mission to wrap up the Serie A side’s transfer business for the summer.

Lukaku has been linked with Villa in recent weeks, with Chelsea open to letting the Belgian international leave this summer for around £38m, nearly a third of what the Blues paid for the attacker back in 2021.

With Lukaku spending the last two seasons out on loan, reuniting with Antonio Conte at Napoli feels like a logical next step for the former Inter Miami star, who won the Serie A title with the Italian manager.

Indeed, Lukaku and Conte reuniting this summer feels like the most ideal solution for all parties in the final days of the window, yet for Villa, missing out on the striker would come across as a big blow.

Lukaku joining Villa always felt like an odd rumour

Lukaku is, on his day and when fully fit, one of the best strikers in the world, with the Belgian international the world’s most expensive player in terms of total transfer fees for good reason.

Yet links to Villa this summer have always felt weird surrounding Lukaku, especially with Emery last season getting the best out of Ollie Watkins in what was to be a historic season for the Villa Park side.

With the England international as good as he has ever been, adding Lukaku to the mix, even as a backup, would have been an unusual move, and Villa might be thankful if the forward ends up signing for Napoli this summer rather than swapping west London for Birmingham.
