The 22-year-old’s efforts helped Sociedad finish sixth in La Liga and beat the Bernabeu club en route to the 2019-20 Copa del Rey final, which will be played this April.

Sociedad were linked with Odegaard last month with a view to getting him another loan spell at the Anoeta, but he opted for Arsenal instead.

Monreal spoke of how Sociedad moved for David Silva to replace Odegaard, telling : “It was a great success for the club. They moved fast.

“Odegaard was a key footballer and we thought he was going to stay but Real Madrid called him and he had to come back.”

When reports of Odegaard looking for a loan move first emerged, plenty of Arsenal fans called for the club to join the race for his signature.

Much to their delight, things moved really quickly and he linked up with Mikel Arteta’s side.

Odegaard made his full Arsenal debut in the 4-2 win over Leeds and looked sharp, which bodes well for the remainder of the season.
