Nabbing Giovani Lo Celso for £27m is a no brainer for Tottenham
Although Giovani Lo Celso has only started two matches for Tottenham Hotspur since arriving on loan in the summer from Real Betis, the Argentine has had all the odds stacked firmly against him making it at Spurs.
Signed by a fellow Argentine in Mauricio Pochettino, 23-year-old Lo Celso would be playing under a fellow countryman at a Champions League finalist. Even he and Pochettino would have something in common – both ex-PSG players.
He would join a side with plenty of Argentine players too, in Juan Foyth, Paulo Gazzaniga and Erik Lamela. Fast forward four months, and things are a lot less rosy then they were. But Tottenham have still got to activate a permanent deal for Lo Celso.
That is because Lo Celso deserves time. The harsher Jose Mourinho has come in, meaning Lo Celso has not only had to adapt to new surroundings in England, a new language and a new style of football – but also a new manager.
Combine that, with Foyth said to be considering his options while Lamela remains injured and has done for quite some time. Just to make it that slightly bit harder for Lo Celso, he missed eight games himself through injury in all competitions.
So, with Real Betis president Angel Haro being as saying that he expects Spurs to complete a January move for Lo Celso – it may come as somewhat surprising given Lo Celso has hardly impressed in his 11 outings.
But, given his tumultuous start at Tottenham – which has been near impossible to make a good impression – along with the fact Spurs can sign Lo Celso for just £27million in January (), £7million less than next summer, a permanent deal makes sense.
Signing Lo Celso next month on a permanent basis is the right move, and if a deal does fail to be a success – at least Tottenham did nont fall into the trap of paying an obligatory £34million at the end of the season.
