‘My understanding is’: Charles Watts shares ‘dreadful’ Arsenal transfer update

Charles Watts has provided an update on the imminent sale of Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi on his channel.

The journalist expects the Gunners talent to complete his permanent move to Marseille after the latest international programme.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta froze Guendouzi out two years ago, and the player has since had two loan spells away from the Emirates.

In 2020-21, the 23-year-old played for Hertha Berlin, while last term, he shone on loan at Marseille.

Guendouzi recorded four goals and eight assists, and was a driving force for Jorge Sampaoli’s side as they finished second in Ligue 1.

The Gunners loanee has even broken into the France senior setup whilst away from Arsenal, with four caps to his name.

Now, Arsenal will reportedly receive a meagre £10million fee for Guendouzi, as per the option to buy they agreed with Marseille last summer.

“It won’t be too long”

Watts, talking about the Frenchman’s imminent move, acknowledged that “it’s not a very good price”.

He also spoke of Arsenal’s “notoriously dreadful” record with regards to the money they get from selling players.

“My understanding is, his move to Marseille will be confirmed pretty imminently,” said Watts.

“He is away at the moment with France.

“I think once that stay comes to an end then it won’t be too long until we hear confirmation that Guendouzi has joined Marseille on a permanent basis.”

“The loan deal that was agreed last summer with Marseille, they included an option to make that deal permanent this summer.”

“Is that enough money? You have to say no”

Watts mentioned there were some some “really silly clauses” that could’ve potentially stopped the deal from happening.

One of those was a relegation break clause for Marseille’s protection in case they went down.

“Obviously that didn’t happen, they had a very good season,” continued Watts. “So those clauses haven’t been hit.

“That means that he will now complete his permanent move to Marseille. That should happen fairly soon, I’m told.

“It’s going to be about £9million, Arsenal are going to receive for Guendouzi. They received a loan fee last season as well.

“Basically, the whole thing with Marseille is going to pocket them about £10million.

“Is that enough money? You have to say no.

“Just looking at how young he is, how he’s done at Marseille, the fact he’s a France international, it’s not a very good price.

“As is the way with Arsenal, who are notoriously dreadful when it comes to selling players.”
