‘My honest opinion’… Ally McCoist on whether Harry Kane should have been sent off vs Arsenal
It was a whirlwind night at The Emirates as Arsenal went from leading the game early on to cancelling out Bayern Munich’s 2-1 lead late on – in a game where inevitably, Harry Kane scored for the Germans.
Coming into the game, Kane had scored 14 goals in 19 games against Arsenal – and he took that to 15 in 20 from the penalty spot to give Bayern the lead. It comes after Bukayo Saka gave the Gunners the lead.
The England winger cut insider and curled home a lovely effort early on, but some sloppy Arsenal passing saw former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry equalise – after a neat counter and pass from Leon Goretzka.
Bayern then went 2-1 up, after William Saliba conceded a penalty and of course it was Kane to score. He spoke after the game of how he had studied David Raya in the penalty shootout in Arsenal’s win v Porto.
Harry Kane involved for good and bad reasons on Tuesday night
Mikel Arteta’s substitutions made an impact. Gabriel Jesus’ brilliant feet laid off Leandro Trossard to curl an effort into the bottom corner – and the scoreline remained the same. But there were other incidents.
Thomas Tuchel branded the decision “horrible” when the referee chose to overlook Gabriel handling the ball inside his penalty area after a goal-kick, after the whistle had gone. Kane could have got a red card.

Just before the hour mark, he gave Gabriel a nasty elbow to the face – and was shown a yellow card for it. It was one of those that many pundits claim is an orange card.
“If you’re asking me my honest opinion I think it’s a foul and a yellow card. That’s where I am on it,” Ally McCoist said while on co-commentary for . The elbow saw Gabriel on the deck for a while.
Keith Hackett says Kane should have been shown a red for elbow
Speaking in his column with after the match, former Premier League referee Hackett says Kane “knew what he was doing” when he delivered a nasty elbow in the director of the Brazilian defender.
It was uncharacteristic for the England captain. A player that is renowned for speaking to referees and producing the odd contentious dive, but never anything malicious. Perhaps, the Arsenal rivalry kicked in.
His Tottenham past revving him up for the game a bit too much, and seeing red. Indeed, replays showed Kane looking at Gabriel as he backed into the Arsenal man, with the ball coming into the Tottenham icon.
A lucky one for Kane perhaps. But all in all, probably a fair result with both sides having shouts for a spot kick in the second half. All to play for at The Allianz Arena next week, where Bayern may fancy a win.
