‘My favourite’: Ian Ferguson names the current Rangers player he’d have loved to play alongside

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has been a major asset for Steven Gerrard’s side for the past two years, not to mention his triumphant spell at Ibrox a decade ago.

The boyhood Bear initially joined Rangers on loan in January 2008 before signing permanently from Fulham in the summer.

Davis’ first spell at Ibrox was incredibly fruitful as he lifted three Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups, three Scottish League Cups and reached the UEFA Cup final.

A spell at Southampton followed, and in 2019, with Rangers back in the Scottish Premiership, he rejoined the Ibrox side – again, first on loan, before signing permanently.

In addition, Davis has recently become the most capped player in Northern Ireland’s history, clocking up 122 appearances for his nation, three ahead of previous record holder Pat Jennings.

It’s little surprise, therefore, that Ian Ferguson, part of the Gers nine-in-a-row team under Graeme Souness and Walter Smith, said Davis is his favourite player at Ibrox.

The 53-year-old, speaking to , also spoke highly of Allan McGregor, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos, whilst assessing the overall quality of Rangers’ squad.

“Steven Davis is my favourite, he’s the old warrior in there and he galvanises the team when he plays,” said Ferguson. “I’d have loved to have played alongside him.

“But also Allan McGregor in goal has made some great saves, James Tavernier is starting to show leadership qualities, and Alfredo Morelos for his goals obviously.

“There looks to be a good balance, and a cohesion and togetherness. I think Gerrard has brought in better quality. You can see the confidence growing.”

There can’t really be much added to what Davis’ peers have said about him – he is a superb player and professional, and Rangers are lucky to have him.

As things stand, Davis’ contract runs until 2021, and with him turning 36 next year, it remains to be seen what his future holds at Ibrox.

That said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him play for a few more years, much like Jermain Defoe – and hopefully he’ll be able to help Rangers to more silverware.
