‘Must win’: Sky pundit shares if he thinks Steven Gerrard will be sacked if Villa lose to Southampton tonight
Former Aston Villa playmaker Paul Merson does not think Steven Gerrard will get sacked even if Southampton win at Villa Park tonight.
The Premier League is back and Gerrard is still under pressure, despite the cancellation of the potentially crunch clash with fellow under-fire boss Brendan Rodgers last weekend.
Merson has predicted the result of tonight’s game under the lights and thinks Villa will get the job done with a 2-0 win.
But even if it is Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men who run out victorious, Merson told that he thinks Gerrard still has enough credit in the bank.

Merson verdict on whether Gerrard will be sacked by Villa
He said: “This is a must-win Premier League game for Aston Villa.
“They got an unexpected 1-1 draw against Manchester City and their game against Leicester City was called off, so this is a good chance for them to get all three points.
“It’s always a different kind of game when you go into it expected to win, but I think Villa will get a positive result.
“At the end of the day, the Premier League is a results business, but I still believe Steven Gerrard still has some time left as Aston Villa manager.
“You never know in football as the fans play a big role in deciding the fate of a manager, but I don’t think they’ll look to sack him even if they lose this one.”
Villa have invested a lot into Gerrard and it would take a lot for them to sack him at any point during the season.
The former Rangers boss was under the cosh going into the Manchester City game last time out but came up with a tactical plan and got a 1-1 draw.
He also got the players to buy into it which shows they are still playing for him, which is crucial when it comes to whether or not to make a managerial change.
