How much is Liverpool midfielder and Barcelona target Philippe Coutinho realistically worth?
The current football transfer market is one that is highly competitive, inflated and increasingly expensive, with clubs willing to pay ridiculously high amounts in order to recruit the top talents.
News these past two weeks has surrounded the reported transfer of Barcelona star Neymar to Paris-Saint Germain for a supposed £185 million, according to , in what seems like a ludicrous and incomprehensible figure for a footballer.
Paul Pogba, last summer, made the move to Manchester United for a record-breaking £89.3 million and a year later Romelu Lukaku joined the Frenchman at Old Trafford for £75 million. Manchester City, meanwhile, have just paid a phenomenal £50 million for right-back Kyle Walker.
However, recent speculation has surrounded his Brazilian teammate and Liverpool player Philippe Coutinho, with the Merseyside club rejecting a £72 million offer for the player, as per .
But what is a Coutinho worth in today’s market, with such high fees and figures flying about?
Firstly, the little Brazilian is hugely important to Jurgen Klopp’s Reds. This past campaign he managed thirteen goals and seven assists – his best season in England – making him one of the side’s best performers statistically.
The forward is vital in creating goals for Klopp’s team, responsible for making them tick and it is very obvious when the ex-Inter man is having a bad game, although this is becoming increasingly rare as he is becoming more and more consistent.
The Liverpool manager is seemingly intent on moving the Brazilian to a deeper, midfield role, with the aim of getting the most of the player.
There is also Coutinho’s age that bumps up his value. He recently turned 25 and, although this is perhaps not extremely youthful in the footballing world, he is still young. Ultimately, the ‘little magician’ still has a lot to give, especially with a move into a deeper midfield role, where the Liverpool man will excel as he sees more of the ball.
Add to this the Reds’ unwillingness to sell – with Jurgen Klopp intent on keeping hold of his star man as he looks to build a title challenging, and potentially Champions League winning side at Anfield – and Coutinho could end up being very costly.
Coupling his importance to Klopp and his potential could make any deal for Philippe Coutinho similar to that of his Brazilian compatriot Neymar, in excess of £150 million. It is clear, after having a £72 million bid rejected, that Barcelona will have to pay big to get their hands on the Liverpool star.
