Moyes says he got ‘really lucky’ with two signings at West Ham, admits they’re not ‘super, super talented’
West Ham United manager David Moyes has said he got ‘really lucky’ with the signings of Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek.
“I was really lucky when we brought in a couple of the Czech boys, not because they were super, super talented but they had super enthusiasm, energy, and I think a lot of people want to see that they think they’re getting 100%,” he said.

Both players have become cult heroes at the London Stadium, and played in West Ham’s opening day defeat to Manchester City.
Soucek was the first of the two to make the move from Slavia Prague to West Ham, initially on a six-month loan before Moyes’ side made the deal permanent in July 2020.
“Tomáš told me on the best things, that it’s a good stadium with good fans and perfect teammates and staff. Tomáš is my very good friend and I hope he will help me here.”
Moyes admits he got ‘really lucky’ with Coufal and Soucek
In two and a half years, Soucek has already topped 100 appearances for the Hammers, and has formed a formidable partnership in midfield with new club captain Declan Rice.
The giant central midfielder has been linked with moves away from West Ham in the past, with Newcastle one club credited with interest, but he’s a vital cog in Moyes’ side and would be very hard to prise away.

Coufal has been equally important in West Ham’s defence, although picked up an injury last season and required surgery, his energy at full-back is impossible to ignore.
West Ham have been linked with defender Thilo Kehrer who is capable at playing at right-back, but he is much more likely to find his way into the West Ham team in the middle or on the left, especially given Moyes’ praise of the Czech full-back.
And although Soucek and Coufal may not be the most technically gifted players to ever pull on the West Ham shirt, their attitude and endeavour is something which certainly makes them stand out.
