‘Most direct attacking player’: Some Liverpool fans praise £100k-a-week man’s display v Burnley
Liverpool fans endured a nightmare 90 minutes on Thursday as the Reds were beaten 1-0 by Burnley at Anfield.
But despite the many negatives, there were a few players who emerged with some credit, one of those being Joel Matip.
The Liverpool centre-back was back in the XI after a four-game absence and helped shore up the defence nicely.

He dealt well with the Burnley attack, both covering runs behind and in the air, and snuffed out the few chances the visitors did have.
Here is what some Liverpool fans on social media made of the man’s efforts:
Most direct attacking player for was Joel Matip. Too many almost cowardly performances in the last third. We will do better.

matip was good

Worst performance of the Klopp era
Got what we deserved
Appalling everywhere (apart from Matip) 🤯

Unfortunately, Matip’s efforts ultimately weren’t enough on a night when most Liverpool players were completely off form.
Burnley’s winner came from the penalty spot as Alisson brought Ashley Barnes down in the box in the latter stages of the game.
The Clarets striker converted the spot kick in the 83rd minute to give his side their first win at Anfield since 1974 and end the Reds’ 68-game unbeaten home run in the league.
Jurgen Klopp’s charges are now six points off the Premier League summit, and will return to league action next Thursday against Tottenham, after facing Manchester United in the FA Cup.
