Celtic attacker Mo Elyounoussi has been discussing what Neil Lennon said that convinced him to join the club on loan this summer.
The Southampton-owned star is on loan at Parkhead until the end of the season. The deal came just one year after the Saints spent£16 million on the Norwegian international who had been in tremendous form for Swiss side FC Basel.
So snapping him up this summer was something of a coup from Celtic and Elyounoussi that it was Lennon’s faith in his ability that convinced him of the Glasgow switch.
“I had a chat with the coach and I was going to ask him about what he expected and tactical things.
“However, the only thing he said to me was that: ‘You’re a good football player, we know what you can do. You do not lose skills during one season. You lose self-confidence, you start to think a little too much and such things, but skills do not lose you. I’ll help you get back there where you were’.
“That was enough to persuade me.”
TBR’s View
There is no doubt that Elyounoussi has the talent to be a Celtic success story. Despite his struggles at Southampton, the attacker scored 13 goals and assisted 17 in 2017-18 with Basel. That includes a goal and an assist as Basel defeated Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at The Etihad in the Champions League.
So far, Celtic are yet to see the 25-year-old in full flow but he did recently score his first goal for the club in the Europa League win over CFR Cluj.
Celtic fans will just hope he can go on to find his best form on a regular basis going forward.
