It was a successful stint for the striker, who clearly loved his time with the Londoners.

The player was keen to join the Cottagers on a permanent basis and got his wish after he received word that Newcastle were open to the sale.

It’s been a fine start to the season for Mitrovic, who has bagged four goals in his first four Premier League games.

Mitrovic on ‘the Benitez way’

A lot of Magpies supporters were sorry to see Mitrovic leave their club this summer.

Many felt as though his commitment to the cause and attitude was admirable and that he still had a lot to offer.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, , he said: “Benitez plays defence and counter-attack. I tried to give my best but it wasn’t me.

“I was just running and getting in the team shape. He told me what he wanted and I tried but I am 90 kilos and if I run so much defensively I have no power left when I am in the box. He knew I couldn’t play in that style and I felt it too.”

Difficult to stomach

It certainly must be hard for Newcastle fans to hear that, especially as they languish at the wrong end of the table.

The Magpies are still being hindered by their achilles heel of not being able to score goals.

This while Mitrovic goes from strength to strength at free-flowing Fulham.

Benitez has come under attack for the way he has set up in the last few games.

Many may now be feeling aggrieved that the Spaniard’s tactics have driven away a potentially great goalscorer.
