Mina’s injury problems threaten to make a mockery of his hefty transfer fee

Yerry Mina has reportedly suffered a serious metatarsal injury and could be sidelined for weeks.

The Everton defender limped out during the FA Cup shock defeat to Millwall and the early signs do not look good for the Colombian.

Worryingly, it is apparently the fourth time the former Barcelona player has suffered such an injury, having first sustained a fracture playing for Palmeiras in 2017.

Fans are waiting with bated breath for official news from the club about how long he will be out for, but the fact that his foot has experienced so much trauma in such a short space of time would suggest he may be out longer than hoped.

Did Everton overpay?

Everton forked out around £27 million to sign Mina, with few batting an eyelid at the fee at the time.

For Mina had just impressed immensely at the World Cup in Russia – but perhaps that was simply some paper over the cracks.

The Toffees seemingly had a case of tunnel vision when it came to his signing. Mina did well, but the short tournament was never going to highlight any potential problems he may have had staying fit.

The £27 million it took to prise Mina away from the Nou Camp last summer is starting to seem expensive. The player took a good while to make his debut for Everton having suffered setbacks in his recovery from the previous injury.

It’s little wonder why Barca were willing to let him leave. Having made just 12 appearances for the club, he has represented very poor value so far.
