Millwall boss Neil Harris already playing mind games ahead of Leeds clash

Millwall manager Neil Harris is already playing mind games with Leeds United ahead of his side’s clash against Marcelo Bielsa’s men on March 30 in

The Lions were unlucky in defeat against Premier League side Brighton over the weekend. Harris’ men were winning 2-0 with just a few minutes left, but Chris Hughton’s side scored two late goals.

The match went to penalties and Millwall lost, with Mahlon Romeo and Jake Cooper both missing from 12 yards. It leaves Millwall with only a relegation fight left to concentrate on.

Immediately after the loss to Brighton, Harris commented on the clash against Leeds after the international break. He claimed that it is “miles bigger” than the FA Cup quarter final.

“We have to take those battling qualities, some of the quality we had with the ball and certainly the energy levels and defensive doggedness we had at times into those nine cup finals,”

“The biggest game of the season by far, miles bigger than today, is Leeds away in two weeks’ time. We’ll enjoy the break, enjoy the rest. We’ve got five games here at The Den in the last eight – they are the games I expect us to win.”

TBR’s view

Leeds fans hate Harris, and the feeling is certainly mutual. The rivalry between Leeds and Millwall has heated up over the last decade since Leeds were relegated into the Football League.

Certainly, Millwall do seem to do well against Leeds. The Whites have only won once against Millwall in their last five duels – a 1-0 win thanks to Alex Mowatt’s strike in the first half, back in February 2015.

Leeds drew 1-1 with Harris’ side earlier this season, with Jack Harrison scoring an excellent late effort. Leeds will be expected to win, but rivalry throws form out of the window. Harris’ mind games only add to that.

He knows his side will relish his comments. It is as though he is giving permission to be aggressive, which will only worry Leeds players and fans alike in their bid for promotion.
