Mikel Merino thinks Mikel Arteta has just made one ‘really smart’ signing at Arsenal

After a successful stint as a striker for Arsenal, Mikel Merino will play a very different role under Mikel Arteta next season.

Following Arsenal’s deal for Viktor Gyokeres, Arteta is most likely to use Mikel Merino as a number eight again.

And whilst it might be frustrating for the Spaniard, he’s set to provide competition or back up for Declan Rice in the left-sided number eight role.

Merino was superb as a striker for Arsenal, but it was never going to be a long-term option for Arteta, who was simply making the most of a difficult situation.

But placed back in midfield, Merino seems very excited to play alongside one of Arsenal’s newest additions next season.

Mikel Merino is excited to see Martin Zubimendi get started at Arsenal

Arsenal’s first significant signing of the summer was Spain international Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

And despite how exciting Gyokeres’ arrival might be for Arsenal fans, Zubimendi might still prove to be the most crucial addition Arteta makes this summer.

That being said, Merino has now spoken about Zubimendi’s arrival in an interview with .

Merino was clearly overjoyed to have his compatriot and former Real Sociedad teammate in north London.

And although the former Newcastle United player warned that patience will be needed, he was convinced that Zubimendi will be a superb addition to the team.

Originally asked about what advice he’d give Zubimendi at Arsenal, Merino said: “The only thing I would say is to be patient when things are not going your way because sometimes you need time to adapt.

“He’s going to adapt perfectly because he’s really smart. The group we have is always helping new guys. I felt the love and the help of everyone.”

Noni Madueke could be Arsenal’s most understated signing this summer

In terms of Arsenal’s other arrivals so far this summer, Noni Madueke might also play a bigger role than some expect after arriving from Chelsea.

Madueke has predominantly arrived as Bukayo Saka’s backup on the right, at least, that’s the role many expect he’ll play.

However, with Gabriel Martinelli’s Arsenal future somewhat uncertain, there could be a real chance that Madueke makes a strong claim for a starting spot on the left too.

Martinelli does currently appear likely to stay at Arsenal, but even so, Madueke could make a real play for his position, a left-footed winger who could provide real width.

Martinelli has done a superb job defensively himself on the left, he sacrifices more offensively in order to maintain the team’s shape than many realise.

However, Madueke might be able to add a new dimension for Arteta on that side.
