Mikel Merino reveals what Mikel Arteta has been doing in training to prepare Arsenal’s players for facing Real Madrid at the Bernabeu

Mikel Merino has revealed what Mikel Arteta’s been doing in training to prepare Arsenal’s players for their clash with Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Gunners travel to the Spanish capital looking to defend their 3-0 lead from the first-leg following Declan Rice’s two sensational free-kicks and Merino’s strike.

Arsenal kept Kylian Mbappe and Vinicus Jr quiet in the first-leg and are now preparing to do the same again in Spain on Wednesday.

Ahead of the clash at the Bernabeu, Merino has explained what Arsenal have been doing in training to ensure they are ready to play at one of football’s biggest arenas.

Mikel Merino on Arsenal’s Bernabeu preparations

Mikel Merino has explained how Mikel Arteta has been putting his Arsenal players in stressful situations in training to ensure they are ready for the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spaniard insists the Gunners must be ready for the challenge of stopping a Real Madrid team that will be out for revenge and be mentally prepared for when they come under pressure.

Merino told : “In any tie, the psychological aspect is important, and with Madrid, even more so because of everything that lies behind it – but the team is ready.

“We have to adapt to whatever happens and stay focused. Mentally, we work hard every day. The manager puts us in stressful situations and prepares us for any type of match.”

Mikel Merino on playing up front for Arsenal and Spain

Merino admits that he has enjoyed playing as a number nine for Arsenal and Spain since making the switch from midfield.

The 28-year-old has six goals in nine matches whilst leading the line for Arsenal in what has been a stroke of genius from Arteta.

Merino added: “It’s been a special season, not just because of the goals, but because I’ve been in a different position, one I’ve never experienced before in my career. It seems like I’m performing.”
