Tottenham Hotspur are said to be interested in signing Memphis Depay and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta could well be the reason why Spurs could pull off this move.

The Dutchman joined Barcelona from Lyon on a free transfer last summer and his first task at his new club was to replace a talented Argentinian you may have heard of named Lionel Messi.

As you can imagine, that’s not easy to do at all and to make things worse, Depay has had quite a few injuries to deal with as well.

However, the 28-year-old has still managed to score 10 goals in all competitions this season That’s not bad at all, but following what happened in the January transfer window, he’s nowhere near the top of Xavi’s pecking order.

Tottenham could sign Memphis Depay thanks to Arsenal boss Arteta

Depay was Barcelona’s first-choice up top but Ferran Torres’ big-money move from Manchester City to the Camp Nou cost him his role.

To make things worse, Arsenal boss Arteta pushed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang out of Arsenal and the Gabon star ended up at Barcelona as well. That has made Depay the third-choice under Xavi and it won’t surprise anyone to see him walk away at the end of this season.

Football journalist Gerard Romero revealed yesterday that Tottenham are keen and have already made an offer to sign the Dutchman, who only joined the Catalans in July last year.

There really is a good chance that Spurs could pull this off next season and Arteta could well be left kicking himself as his controversial decision to push Aubameyang out of Arsenal could now help his side’s local rivals to sign a fantastic attacker.

One of the best

Depay knows the Premier League reasonably well thanks to his time in England with Manchester United. That spell was by no means a success for the Dutchman, but he has improved massively since leaving Old Trafford.

After a fantastic few years at Lyon, Depay made his move to Spain and Barcelona wonderkid Riqui Puig labelled him as one of the best in the world right after he joined the club.

Puig said last year, as per : “Depay? He’s a very close player, I had been told very well about him and I think he’ll do very well.

“He’s a scorer at European level, one of the best players, and I think he can give us many things. I’m very eager to play with him and win many titles with him.”
