Mikel Arteta wanted to take a risk on £60m attacker but Arsenal couldn’t get the deal done

Arsenal were desperate to land a striker in the January transfer and there was one player who was available that Mikel Arteta told them they needed to sign.

However, the winter transfer window has now slammed shut and Kai Havertz remains the Gunners’ first choice number nine.

The North London club looked at several options throughout the window although many of them proved to be unattainable in January.

But there was one big-money move available and Arteta convinced Arsenal to put the cash on the table for him, but it was a deal they just couldn’t get over the line.

Mikel Arteta convinced Arsenal to move for Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa and Arsenal discussed the possibility of doing a deal for Ollie Watkins when the two clubs faced off in the Premier League on January 18, according to .

Mikel Arteta is understood to have jumped at the chance to sign Watkins and convinced the North London club’s hierarchy to attempt to land him.

Any bid for Watkins would have scuppered their chances of signing someone like Benjamin Sesko in the summer and this was a risk the Gunners’ boss was willing to take.

The Spanish coach believed that Arsenal’s need for a striker in January and the Villa man being Premier League-proven was a good enough reason to make their move.

Arsenal had a £60 million bid for Watkins rejected but it was just too late as Jhon Duran ended up signing for Al-Nassr and the Midlands club were no longer open to selling their other striker.

Arsenal made late move for Alvaro Morata

Arsenal made a late move to sign Alvaro Morata on loan from AC Milan as they desperately looked for options.

However, the Gunners were beaten to his signature by Galatarsary who moved quickly to secure him on a loan deal.

The 32-year-old had six goals to his name in 25 appearances this term at the San Siro so it’s unclear quite how much of an impact he could have had at the Emirates.
