Mikel Arteta says Arsenal have a truly ‘phenomenal’ player in their ranks

Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe has been praised by Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, who says his work ethic has been “phenomenal” and that he’s come a long way in the past few months.

The 25-year-old scored a crucial away goal for Arsenal in their defeat to Villarreal, the latest contribution to what has been an impressive Europa League campaign for him.

Pepe, who netted from the penalty spot in the second half, has now been involved in more goals in the European competition than any other player, scoring six times and registering four assists.

Arteta, speaking to the Arsenal ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United, spoke highly of the £72million man.

“I think he’s come a long way in the last few months,” said the Spaniard.

“His work ethic has been phenomenal and he’s deciding many more games and doing what he can do in the final third in a much more consistent way.

“So I’m really happy with his performances and now he needs to continue like this.

“Confidence in every player is crucial and every time you step on that field, if they feel secure, if they feel protected, if they feel like they’re supported by their manager and their teammates, it’s something that is crucial to be able to perform.

“Then with the things that he could do better, he’s doing much better with as well. But it’s all a mix that is reflected in his performance.”

Pepe’s time at Arsenal hasn’t been smooth sailing and he may not be as consistent as needed just yet, but he shows up in big games and delivers.

The stage is set at the Emirates next week and hopefully he’ll once again step up and do what’s needed to win the tie and earn Arsenal a spot in the final.
