Mikel Arteta says Arsenal have a ‘special’ 17-year-old who can already play in three positions

Arsenal fans will be treated to seeing a few less familiar faces when Bolton Wanderers arrive at the Emirates Stadium for their EFL Cup tie on Wednesday evening.

Mikel Arteta’s side are currently recovering from three incredibly difficult away trips, and in all honesty, Arsenal could probably do without another mid-week game.

That being said, several Arsenal players will disagree and will be desperate for a chance to impress, the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling.

Arteta has hinted that he’ll start Sterling, an indication of the improved strength in depth that the Gunners will enjoy this season.

And as well as two more experienced members of his squad, the Arsenal boss will also turn to one or two youngsters, the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Mikel Arteta opens up on Myles Lewis-Skelly ahead of Bolton chance

Ahead of facing Bolton, and after his antics against Manchester City, Arteta has now spoken about Lewis-Skelly at length, praising his ‘special character’.

The Arsenal manager was speaking at the tail end of his press conference and said that the youngster had a ‘competitive edge’ – something you can’t always teach.

Arteta said: “He is a competitor. You look at him, in every duel he goes, the way he reacts with his team-mates, you speak to him it’s constantly eye contact. He’s nudging, he’s asking questions, it’s a special character.

“He can play in three positions basically, as a left back, as a number six, as a number eight, he’s very versatile. He adapts, from there he can occupy different spaces.

“He’s very adaptable, that’s the good thing about Myles – he’s very intelligent, very thorough.

“He has some unbelievable questions every time you ask him to do something, and he has the competitive edge which I think is demanded at this level. And he really wants it, so we are going to use him in different positions.”

Ethan Nwaneri also ready to make his full Arsenal debut

Given how long he’s now been around the Arsenal first team, it’s odd to think that Nwaneri is yet to make his first start for the club.

Debuting at 15-years-old two years ago, Nwaneri’s progress has been watched the whole way by a lot of Arsenal supporters, a talent hoped to be of the Bukayo Saka echelon.

And Arsenal fans will be delighted to get a look at Nwaneri against Bolton, when Arteta could make seven changes to his starting eleven.

That being said, and with a look to this weekend’s Premier League tie with Leicester City, Micah Richards and Gary Lineker have shared their view on Arsenal winning the league after the news that Rodri has injured his ACL.

A significant moment in the title-race, and one that perhaps swings the pendulum in Arsenal’s favour.
