Mikel Arteta reveals the message Carlo Ancelotti told him after Arsenal eliminated Real Madrid from the Champions League

Mikel Arteta has revealed what Carlo Ancelotti told him about Arsenal’s Champions League campaign after they eliminated Real Madrid.

Arsenal reached their first Champions League semi-final in 16 years following a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate victory over Real Madrid.

The Gunners blew the reigning European champions away over two legs, and they even managed to win on the night at the Santiago Bernabeu, courtesy of goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

After the tie, Ancelotti, who is now under big pressure at Madrid, gave Arteta a message which he hopes will happen in the next round of the competition.

Carlo Ancelotti’s message to Mikel Arteta about Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has revealed that Carlo Ancelotti told him he’s now rooting for Arsenal to win the Champions League following Real Madrid’s exit.

Speaking after the match, Arteta said: “(Ancelotti was) very affectionate with me and told me I hope we win. And he wished me the best of luck.”

The 15-time European champions had no answer to Arteta’s defensive set-up as they hoisted balls into the box, which William Saliba and his teammates mopped up with ease. Madrid attempted 42 crosses, however, they completed just seven of them.

Saliba was outstanding against Madrid as the Frenchman managed to complete more defensive actions than any other player on the pitch at the Bernabeu.

What Mikel Arteta told Pep Guardiola before beating Real Madrid

Meanwhile, Arteta also explained how he phoned Pep Guardiola the morning before beating Madrid to thank him for helping him reach this point in his managerial career.

The Arsenal boss claims that he would not be where he is today had it not been for the guidance that the legendary Spanish coach provided him with.

Arteta confessed in his press conference: “I called Guardiola this morning because I’m here thanks to him. He was my inspiration as a coach and as a player, and I spent four years with him.”
