Mikel Arteta reacts to David Luiz’s display in Arsenal loss; comments on Rob Holding

Mikel Arteta has praised David Luiz’s performance in Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City, and admitted – – that they are not yet sure how long Rob Holding will be sidelined for.

The Gunners were dealt a blow ahead of Saturday evening’s clash. Holding was named in the starting lineup for the clash at the Etihad Stadium. However, he sustained an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Luiz.

It proved to be a frustrating night for the Gunners. And Arteta confirmed that they are now waiting to see how serious Holding’s problem is. He did however, go on to praise his replacement.

“We don’t know,” he said, , when asked how serious Holding’s injury is.

“It was bad enough to make the decision to get him out of the game and get David in. David was really focused, he came on and I think he had a great game.”

The good news for Arsenal is they have no shortage of centre-back options. William Saliba is awaiting the chance to make his debut.

Meanwhile, the likes of Calum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi look to be edging towards getting back to full fitness.

So the Gunners should be able to cope without Holding – who earns £25,000-a-week, – if he is out for any substantial period.

Luiz meanwhile, continues to make improvements after coming in for criticism in the past. Of course, it was not a flawless display.

But considering the circumstances in which he came into the team, Arteta is surely right to praise him.
