Mikel Arteta has praised Arsenal goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson
Mikel Arteta has given praise to Arsenal goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson, who has not started a Premier League game this season.
The 25-year-old joined in the summer and made his first Premier League appearance on Tuesday, as he was required as a substitute in response to Bernd Leno’s red card in the Wolverhampton Wanderers defeat.
With Mat Ryan joining on loan from Brighton, Runarsson looks like he may be third-choice now in the goalkeeper pecking order for the rest of the season.
The £40,000-a-week () man looked solid in his four appearances in the Europa League, but came under the spotlight and received widespread criticism for a horror performance in the Carabao Cup quarter-final loss to Manchester City in December.
But Gunners manager Arteta has been upbeat about the goalkeeper’s attitude.
“Yeah, he works really hard and he’s fitting in really well around the dressing room. He’s a really nice boy, really humble and he needs to be away from all the comments to focus on his work and improving,”

TBR’s View:
Runarsson has already been written off by many Arsenal supporters after one woeful display and it’ll be hard for him to come back for it.
The Iceland international may get a chance though this weekend if Ryan doesn’t return from his injury in time and perhaps he’ll get a chance to salvage things at the Emirates Stadium.
They travel to Aston Villa on Saturday for their next league meeting and will be looking to respond to the Wolves defeat.
