Mikel Arteta has latest update on Mikel Merino as new Arsenal signing is already injured

Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Mikel Merino faces a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League showdown against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Merino joined the club for a fee believed to be in the region of earlier this summer and was in line to make his debut for the club this weekend.

However, it now appears as if Arsenal fans will have to wait a bit longer to watch their newest arrival in action.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s trip to the Amex Stadium, Arteta delivered the bad news on Merino.

“It’s unfortunate. He has a shoulder injury and it looks like he will be out for a few weeks. He landed on the floor and Gabi landed on top of him, it’s a fracture probably.”

Merino has been described as a ‘world-class’ player by Kieran Tierney and his injury layoff is a huge blow for him as he aims to make an impression at his new club.

Arteta also confirmed that Gabriel Jesus is injured and will not feature against Brighton, although he didn’t go into detail about the nature and extent of the Brazilian’s issues.

Arsenal face tricky test against Brighton

With Brighton also coming on the back of successive Premier League wins at the start of the new season, Arsenal have their work cut out for them to maintain their perfect record.

Paul Merson predicts a 2-1 away win for the Gunners, but the Seagulls will be riding on a high after securing a late win against Manchester United last weekend.

Over the past two seasons, Arsenal have been quite lucky with injuries barring William Saliba’s layoff at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

However, their luck seems to have waned at the start of the new season, with Merino and Jesus picking up injuries within the first three weeks.

The only silver lining is that neither of them was expected to start against Brighton, indicating that they have enough firepower to get the job done.
