The manager insisted that he was ‘really happy’ with his overall contribution, and said a big goal tally might be possible if he is available for enough minutes this season.

: “We need goals from him, that’s for sure. He has to score a lot of goals for us and he can still improve in that aspect.

“Like he can improve in other aspects. He knows that and he is trying to do that, but there is so much that he gives it is difficult to put a number into that. I am really happy with his overall performances.

“The reason he hasn’t done it [scored 20 goals] is that he hasn’t had the consistency or enough minutes when he was at City to produce the numbers you need to be doing but I believe he has the ability to, for sure.”

Of course, Arteta does rarely speak on these kinds of things, so it’s particularly intriguing to hear his interpretation.

Mikel Arteta does think Gabriel Jesus needs to score more goals for Arsenal

And that is often centred around the team’s attacking displays, and in particular, scoring goals.

Jesus’ attempts have been massively blighted by injury at Arsenal, and although Arteta pointed to his time at Manchester City as interrupted, the same has happened in North London owing to misfortune.

But opportunities like tonight’s visit to Kenilworth Road now can’t pass Jesus by.

As well as linking the attacking play and leading the press, as he does to a world-class standard, Arteta does want to see goals.

He’s clearly laid down a challenge to the Brazilian.

And whilst Arteta is now asking for more goals from one player, he has demanded that another stops attempting something that isn’t suiting his game
