Midfielder said to be Liverpool’s No.1 target has just been left out of his side’s first league game

Liverpool have already been thwarted in their attempts to sign Martin Zubimendi as Richard Hughes attempts to sign a new central midfielder for Arne Slot.

The Reds were rejected by Zubimendi as he opted to stay in his homeland with boyhood club Real Sociedad, although another midfielder linked with a move to Liverpool has now been left out of his side’s first league game of the 2024/25 campaign as an exit looms…

Teun Koopmeiners left out after being linked to Liverpool

An exit is seemingly close for Teun Koopmeiners – after Gian Piero Gasperini left him out of the Serie A clash between Atalanta and Lecce.

The 26-year-old Netherlands international was joined by Ademola Lookman in being dropped by the UEFA Europa League holders as departures near.

It comes after claimed that Koopmeiners is Liverpool’s No.1 target for the midfield department this summer.

Fabrizio Romano believes Juventus have left a €59m (£50.3m) proposal on the table to sign the Dutchman – although he is yet to give the green light to the Italian giants.

That is roughly the same amount that Liverpool offered Real Sociedad for Zubimendi, so we know that there is enough cash in the budget to sign the Atalanta No.7 this summer.

Koopmeiners has – reportedly – worked his way onto Liverpool’s radar after a stunning 2023/24 campaign, in which he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in 51 appearances.

Dutchman would offer Arne Slot a source of goals from midfield

Koopmeiners is far more attack minded than Zubimendi, and with Liverpool rarely scoring many from midfield, this move could offer Slot a new goalscoring weapon if it materialises.

As aforesaid, the Dutchman – who shone under Slot at AZ Alkmaar – scored 15 goals last season, whereas Zubimendi only netted four, while the Atalanta outcast also scored ten goals in the 2022/23 campaign.

Koopmeiners – who is not training with Atalanta right now – is clearly a dangerous midfielder for opponents to handle, and at the age of just 26, he is right in the midst of his prime years too.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Slot could turn to his fellow countryman to help solve Liverpool’s midfield issues.
