Midfielder Liverpool sold for £6m admits he could’ve stayed and ‘done more’ at Anfield

Liverpool have had their fair share of top players over the decades, including a host of stars over the past twenty or so years.

There have also been players who didn’t do so well at Liverpool but went on to shine elsewhere, and one such player has now spoken about his time at Anfield.

The player in question is Luis Alberto, who was on the books at Liverpool between 2013 and 2016, but only made 12 competitive appearances for the Reds.

Liverpool sold Alberto to Lazio for around £6million in 2016 (), and he went on to become an icon for the Rome club, clocking up 307 competitive appearances.

Although the 31-year-old may not be remembered by many Liverpool fans these days, the player himself seems to think about his time at Anfield a lot.

Luis Alberto says he ‘could have done more’ at Liverpool

Speaking to , Alberto made it clear that he could have stayed Liverpool, but instead decided to leave for more game time.

“Even in Liverpool the dressing room was beautiful,” said the Al-Duhail ace. “I could have done more: I could have stayed there, but I was young and I wanted to play, so I went.”

Alberto went on to shine for Lazio, with praise coming his way from the likes of Alvaro Morata and many others.

“He seems to me one of the most underrated players of the last 25 years in Spain,” Morata told in 2023.

“He is technical, he has personality, I think he is very very strong.”

Luis Alberto previously said Liverpool issues were ‘a little bit my fault’

This isn’t the first time Alberto has spoken about his time at Liverpool. He did so in 2020 too.

At the time, he told France Football – via – that he saw it as “a shame” that he was unable to show his potential at Liverpool, blaming himself “in terms of work and focus.”

“I think it’s a little bit my fault,” said Alberto.

“I didn’t do everything necessary to be at my level in terms of work and focus. What I should have done at 20, I was only able to do it at 25.

“It’s a shame, I lost a few years. I’m 27 now. I’m trying to make the most of it and I think there’s a lot of time left to continue to enjoy myself.”
