Midfield injuries mean West Ham cannot afford to let Obiang leave this month

West Ham United midfielder Pedro Obiang is wanted by Ligue 1 outfit Lille this month,

They that Obiang is being sounded out as a potential replacement for Thiago Mendes, the central midfielder who is attraction attention in the January market.

Fiorentina are also on the scene and have a first refusal clause if Obiang is to be allowed to leave the London Stadium.

But Lille are reading to offer around £10m for the energetic midfielder, once the probable sale of Mendes swells their pockets.

But Manuel Pellegrini is currently dealing with a host of midfield injury problems – most notably, Carlos Sanchez and Jack Wilshere at the heart of the engine room – and should not be looking to offload any players in that position this month.

Obiang is still a useful option, capable of protecting the backline and offering energy in midfield, and with the Hammers still at least one holding player short of where Pellegrini wants them to be, Obiang should be staying in east London until the end of the season at the very least.

Unless the Mendes money makes Lille considerably up their bid – which would significantly alter the landscape – then Obiang should stay put.
