Middlesbrough’s home goalscoring record gives Leeds chance to get back on track
Tony Pulis has moulded his Middlesbrough side well and truly into his own image as they look to gain promotion back to the Premier League.
Boro are generally tough to break down, but their attacking play is now rudimentary and often blunt, as exhibited by their inability to show their class against Newport County in midweek.
And as Leeds United look to get back on track after last weekend’s 3-1 home defeat to Norwich continued a run of recent poor form, one statistic should give them encouragement.
As per , Boro have just 14 home goals in the league this season – only basement side Bolton have scored less – and just six Championship wins at the Riverside Stadium all season indicate that is a real barrier to them breaking opponents down.
The flipside of that is the stingiest home defensive record in the league – conceding just nine – but visiting sides know they will always be in the game because Boro simply cannot score the goals to put them out of sight.
Derby were able to go to the Riverside and utterly dominate the game earlier this season – so Leeds will fancy their chances of doing similar with their slick passing game.
It’s just a matter of Leeds retaining confidence in their attacking play and taking their chances when they do come, because if they do get ahead, there has not been much evidence from Boro’s home form this season that they can get back into a game.
