Middlesbrough starlet Djed Spence dismisses Tottenham speculation

Middlesbrough prospect Djed Spence has claimed that his sole focus is on holding down a regular place in the team, despite interest from Tottenham.

The youngster has been speaking to after helping Boro to a 2-2 draw against Derby County on Saturday.

Spence caught the eye of Spurs boss Jose Mourinho after the two teams drew 1-1 in the FA Cup at the start of the month .

The 19-year-old is enjoying a breakthrough season in Jonathan Woodgate’s team. He has played eight times during 2019/20, proving a capable player in any position on the right-hand side.

Spence scored his first goal for Boro in a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

He says the interest is flattering but maintains a focus on pinning down a place in the Middlesbrough team.

“Of course, it’s flattering to read that stuff. It’s a good feeling.

“But I just need to stay focused. I want to play well and stay focused and not let all that get to me. I’m just a young footballer and I need to keep doing what I have been doing.”

Spence has been part of a team that had won four games on the trot prior to Saturday’s draw.

The run of form has lifted Boro up the Championship table and Spence is keen to continue the decent form.

“It has been a good feeling being in the team and it’s been a good spell for us.

“I just want to carry on and keep going forward, keep learning and keep playing.”

TBR View – Spence will get another Mourinho audition tomorrow

The youngster appears to be grounded, professional and grateful for the chance that has been given to him at Middlesbrough.

Money inevitably talks in football, however, and it Tottenham do make a serious bid, it will surely be considered.

Spence should be in the Boro team that travels to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow night and Mourinho will surely be keeping a close eye on the youngster.

Serge Aurier is the man currently in possession of the right-back starting berth.

The Tottenham boss seems to fancy him for that role and signing a youngster like Spence to learn from the Ivorian seems to make logical sense.

Whether Spurs make a move this month remains to be seen but it does seem as though the interest will remain.
